
Margaret Bourke White
Margaret Bourke White is a very famous photographer. However, she was born in the Bronx in New York to a Jewish man from Poland and an Irish Catholic woman. She claims to have gotten her perfectionist traits from her father who was an inventor. She graduated from Cornell University after originally studying herpetology at Columbia University. She is known for her black and white work in South Africa. She took lots of pictures of young men in mines. She is a Life Magazine photographer. Prior to that she took pictures for Fortune Magazine. She is also a war photojournalist and famous foreign photographer.Arguably her greatest accomplishment was her photo of Fort Peck Dam appearing on the Life Magazine cover. Some may argue that her biggest accomplishment is being the first female war correspondent. Some of her famous works were of Joseph Stalin and pictures of victims of the dust bowl. White married and divorced twice in her lifetime. She later died at age 67 of Parkinson’s Disease in Connecticut. Many of her works are in museums such as the Brooklyn Museum, the New Mexico Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
